Allowing employees to telecommute has advantages beyond saving the environment from the harmful emissions of greenhouse gases. The employer must also benefit from an employee that is allowed to work domestically, or the arrangement will end up costing more money and the telecommuting privilege will be terminated.

Office overhead expenses can be reduced by allowing employees to telecommute from their house. Cost savings will only be fully realized if the employee telecommutes nearly one hundred percent of their time.

Only then will you be able to free up office space and support staff. If an employee only telecommutes part-time, then an office, desk, equipment and support staff will still have to be maintained.

There have been many studies that have proven that employees are happier and their production levels are higher when they are allowed to telecommute. In order to insure that the telecommuting employee produces an acceptable level of productivity, a communications routine and measurable performance standards must be agreed upon before the employee is allowed to do their job at their house.

If employees are working at home and travel to the office is not required on a regular basis, then the entire world becomes your acceptable labor pool. It will not matter where your telecommuting employees live, as long as they regularly communicate with the office and performance levels are met.

In many cases, working mothers may have to reinvent themselves to land an in-house job. Working mothers have to figure out the talents they possess that can transcend the office, and be utilized at a home-based job.

When you do your job domestically, you want to pick up your kids from school and take them to extracurricular activities. For this reason, you should have flexible hours.

If you run a home-based business, you can invoice at night after the kids go to bed. If your business is in a different time zone, you can adjust to their schedules more easily while at home as well.

This can allow you to spend time with your family during the day. You do not want your operation costs to outweigh your revenue.

If you launch an in-house business, your start-up costs may be hefty, so you will need to set profit goals. Draw up a business plan that employs strategic planning resources for running a cost-effective business from home.

When you do your job from home, you may be tempted to work at all hours, but it is important to let it rest at the end of the day. Close your office door and shut down the computer at the end of your day.

If you work in different areas of the house, your business materials and files can become very unorganized and scattered. Whether you work in the basement, attic, or garage, make you’re you designate a space for your job that is separate from everything else.

In order to telecommute, you certainly cannot be a slacker. In fact, you need to have a more disciplined work ethic.

Many business owners benefit from flexible schedules, which often can be achieved when working from your house. You should, however, avoid multitasking, such as taking client telephone calls while you’re vacuuming the living room.

You also cannot be easily distracted. If you start watching your favorite television soaps each day, your in-house job will suffer in many ways.

At-home jobs often extend into the evening, especially if you take breaks in the day to spend time with the kids, do homework, and make dinner. Any time you resume work consider it a new day or segment of your day.
