Medical Transcription For Physicians?
Medical Transcription
Okay, so call me lazy. I had to pull out an old medical transcription post instead of writing or curating a new blog post regarding medical transcription. The following is an old post…a question that was asked by a physician with responses to the question below. Click on the “Comment” link below this post to see 9 responses to this question.
It’s a question that one might not hear asked often by a Physician, but hope this would be of benefit to someone. Also below, check out an actual medical transcription demo. Enjoy.

3I agree with the point you made. I wonder how things would be going now if this action had taken a different turn? I’d be interested in what you think.

I have been a medical transcriptionist for 20 years, and I tell you truthfully, you won’t get anywhere with your grammar and spelling skills. I medical school they don’t teach you to type, spell and construct sentences. Your skills really do not apply. Also, I can tell you are not a native American speaker, and this will work against you.
To answer your question, you get paid from 6 to 10 cents per line for transcription that does not have to be edited.

Based on your typing skills seen in your question, stick to being a physician. You would make so much more money as a physician, why in the world would you want to do transcription? I have been in the medical transcription field for over 20 years and can tell you that it is a dying field. We are being replaced by software that types what is dictated and when we are not being replaced by technology, our jobs in America are going overseas. Until they invent a robot to do surgery, you should have a job.

Yes it’s very easy to get into this field. You have to type really fast though. It is going to be REALLY easy for you since Medical Terminology is usually the hardest thing to learn. You are going to want to check out hospitals for Surgical Transcribing and the equipment should you decide to do it at home is a computer with Transcribing software, a fax, and a phone. You can sign up with companies that are like clearinghouses and Drs send their stuff to them then the company sends them on to you. You get paid by the piece and can pay anywhere from .30 to .75 depending on factors. I can tell you it requires a lot of time to earn anywhere near what you are making as a surgeon. I would encourage you to do Billing and Coding. I do it and it’s a hell of alot easier than transcribing and basically if you have all the right software an idiot could do it. You’d be stupendous at this bcuz you would be better able to tell if sumthing is bilateral, unilateral and other specific things that can be so hard for those of us who have only worke din the ALLIED health field. email me if you want to know more, i can IM if you want.

i was a medical transcriptionist with 3 years experience.
basically it has a lot to do with:
1) Knowing and mastering Microsoft Word (any word processor program) in order to comply with the client’s formatting
You need to be well informed regarding information issues, privacy/security. You will be handling a lot of patient information those of which are very private, not to mention their ss numbers.
2) Having a good ear, most physicians babble or eat while talking on the dictaphone. Its maddening. Others with deeper than deep southern accents will make you wanna scream.
3) Patience
4) A good back, you’ll be sitting for a long time.
5) It would help if you’re a touch typist with around 65 wpm
6) Have programs that you need to use, like winamp..Real Player etc
7) Have foot control pedal for pause play and stop, maybe available in eBay
Check this out:

It pays 2.50 per line. Others pay per word!
I think you’ll get higher rates doc.
good luck, you’re gonna love this job.
