I want to start a home based business baking cookies and I live in California. Not really sure where to start.?
I know we have a lot of rules and regulations so I was curious if anyone has done this? Thanks!!!!
You will have to check with your county for all of the laws on this…….however, I live in California and I know for a fact that you cannot bake in your own home. The baking would have to be done in a building not attached to your home. California is more strict on this than any other state.
I would love to do this myself.
There can be ways around this if you have an additional small building on your home lot, as long as it’s not attached. Also if you have some space on your property, then consider adding a small building on your lot if that would be worth the trouble. If the building is not on your property, then it’s not a home based business.
Here’s Some Info If You Live In Other States And Want To Start A Home Based Baking Business:
There is not a vast amount of information on the web regarding, how to Start a Licensed Home-based Baking Business. However, before you begin, I suggest that you think about your niche. Maybe like baking cookies or your probably enjoy baking cakes, etc. You see, when you identify your niche you would know exactly what route you want to take before even getting started.
Now to begin, you can go through your Yellow Pages, or just drive around your town to find other bakers, chefs, caterers, etc, in your area. You can also see if you can find other home based food business owners to learn from their experiences. You would also need to call your county, state licensing office to find out what you need to do in order to start a home based baking business.
You know what else, there is an initial inspection and your kitchen would have to pass that inspection. You must also be fully licensed with a commercial licensed. Some states have different requirements than others, however, most rules and regulations are pretty much similar. There are several other factors that you would have to take into consideration when getting started and also keeping your business running and successful.
I hope that helps — Vernette Carbon

Go to the local Health Dept. and get a copy of the requirements for a commercial kitchen and the safety and health regulations you must meet. Some places (churches?) may allow you to use their commercial kitchens.
Consider how you are going to market your cookies – who your target market will be, demographics of your area, the cost of time and production versus what you intend to charge.
You may need to have your product analyzed for the nutritional content. And you’ll need to determine the shelf life.
Best wishes!
