3 Funny, Shocking Tips To Increase Website Traffic

March 01, 2010 By: vernette Category: How To - Website Traffic

Have you ever wondered how some people manage to create a video from their kitchen table, upload it to Youtube, and vuala… over 1,000,000 views in a short period of time? Was it a fluke? Is there some secret formula for getting so many views on a Youtube video?

The question is, what really makes a Youtube video go viral? Some videos become so popular that the author of the video ends up with a movie deal, a record deal, etc. That doesn’t happen too often though.  However, Youtube video marketing can get you lots of viewers, which can drive a boatload of traffic to your site when done the right way.

Google has a love affair with Youtube and Youtube videos tend to show up in the search engine quickly.  Once you have your video uploaded on Youtube, you must have a link back to your website on the top right side, next to your video (below the subscribe button).  You also need to have your website link showing at the beginning and end of the video.

Is There A Secret Formula?

Is there really some type of secret formula that can get you thousands or even millions of hits over a short period of time? Well I’ve questioned that many times and it baffled me how some videos, like the “Charlie Bit My Finger–Again,” video, received so many views.

Now take a look at the “Charlie Bit My Finger–Again,” video below. Again, this video received over 164 million views. What do you think? Is it that funny? This was one of those videos that went viral and no one seems to really know why it’s the most viewed video on Youtube ever.

I love this video, but seriously, I’ve seen hundreds of videos much funnier. Anyway, that’s just my opinion. Take a look:

Funny, Shocking, And Sexy

Well I hope you enjoyed the video, especially if you never saw it before. Now what is my point here? Well, if you want to get Youtube viewers attention, your video needs to fit in either one of these three following categories… funy, shocking, or of a sexual nature.  When I say sexual, I mean for example, a thumbnail of a woman in a bikini (see example video thumbnail a couple videos below).

I’m not saying that videos in other categories do not receive hundreds of thousands of views or even millions, but it’s just that these three categories top the list. If you really look around Youtube you will see that the videos with the highest views pretty much fit into those categories. Below is an example of a shocking video.

The author of that video earned thousands of dollars from that video. It received over 400,000 views.
The author of the video linked the video to a company offering car insurance. He was an affiliate of that product and received a commission whenever anyone filled out there name on a form to get a car insurance quote. So he didn’t have to sell anything. Awesome, isn’t it? This is how it works.

Now let’s get back to the “Charlie” video. Personally, I think that the video below is funnier than the Charlie video. It had me in stitches. This video is in fourth place for the top 10 most viewed Youtube videos of all time.  It’s hilarious.  Again, this is only my opinion.  See below.

Tips And Tricks To Increasing Video Views

So now let me get to the point here. There is no specific formula that you can follow to a tee and get over a million views on Youtube. However, there are several things you can do to increase your chances.

As I mentioned previously, the video needs to fit in the comedy, shock, or sex categories. Second of all, you must have a “killer” keyword targeted, headline, one that would make people want to click on the video to view it.

Do some keyword research before hand and then search that keyword via youtube and see how many veiws the top video has. This way you know what you are working with. What some people actually do is steal the tags and description from the top viewed videos in order to increase their chances of getting many views like their competition.

Great Headlines

Another thing people do is create misleading headlines. I actually get annoyed when people put up misleading headlines to get lots of views like the one below. The video below is cute, but it has absolutely nothing to do with the headline. I hate being misled. Take a look at the video below to see exactly what I’m talking about.

Hot, Sexy Thumbnails

Another trick to getting lots of views is to set up your thumbnail to peak people’s interest. The thumbnail is the image from the video that people see whenever your video is displayed in the Youtube listings.

The thumbnail is actually the part of the video that most people pay attention to. There’s one problem though. Youtube actually chooses your thumbnail. You have a choice of three thumbnails that Youtube creates for you to choose from.

I’ve submitted videos, and the thumbnails that Youtube chose that were completely unrelated to the part of the videos that I wanted to emphasize. I’ve always wondered why Youtube never gives the video author the option to chose what part of the video should be the thumbnail. Well, there is actually a way to get the thumbnail of your choice.  However, some math is involved (multiplication). So if you got an “F” in math, you would have a problem here.  He he…

It’s Time To Calculate

Here’s what I do now. In order to calculate your three thumbnails, you must take the amount of minutes of your video and multiply them by three different variables (.25, .50, .75).

For example, if you have a one-minute video (60 seconds), your three thumbnails would fall at 15 seconds (60x.25), 30 seconds (60x.50), and 45 seconds (60x.75). Take a look at the thumbnail below and look at the entire video to see how the video author was able to cleverly set up such a sexy thumbnail from such a “dark” video.

One Last Tip

I have one more tip that I want to share with you. I stumbled upon this technique and I implemented it. I will share exactly what I did below. First let me describe a little about the video that I used to test this tip.

I created a Youtube Channel and a blog for my sister and just threw a video together. It was one of those experimental videos that I created, uploaded to Youtube and forgot all about it. My sister did too.

My sister never bothered with that blog that I created for her, or the Youtube channel. As a matter of fact the channel is completely dead… no activity for months.  I just checked Youtube and saw that the channel has four subscribers… suprised.  It also seemed like the video was embedded in multiple blogs because the page rank of the blog went from a PR 0 to a PR 4.

Boring As Hell

What surprised me was that my video didn’t fit into the comedy, shock, or sex category. As a matter of fact it was a tutorial…informative, but boring as hell. However, it got the message across and some extra traffic came along with that too. It wasn’t a whole lot of traffic, but I’m showing you how a neglected video received over 1,500 views. The video tutorial is entitled, “How To Have Soft, Plump Lips.”

Want to know what I did?  Well here’s what I did. I looked for a video (The Perfect Red Lips Tutorial) with over 100,000 views. The video is in a similar category of my (lip plumping) video.

I then post a video response to “The perfect red lips tutorial,” video. My video response was once in the top 4 video lineup under the video with the Red Lip Tutorial video for probably no more than a couple days.

This was because, as time went on, other people posted video responses and pushed my video further down the “Totem pole.”  The views also went down the drain as more people added video responses.  Here’s the video that I’m talking about:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maQhftPjJHc&feature=related

The whole concept here is to get people to watch your video after they’ve finished watching the original video (The Perfect Red Lip Tutorial for example). Your main goal should be to get your video response showing up in the top four spots along with the other video responses. You want to make sure that your video is on display right before your viewers eyes.

Don’t Get Lost In The Shuffle

Here is what you can do as more and more people post video responses, and your video gets lost in the shuffle. You can then add that same video as a response to another high traffic video in the same niche market. Don’t do like I did and upload a video and forget about it. Market the living daylights out of that video.

So go ahead… create your funny, shocking, or sexy video, and send a boatload of highly targeted, free traffic to your blog or website.  Make sure that you are careful with sexy videos because Youtube will shut you down if that video is too “Raw.”  Make sure you read the policies, terms, and services in order to abide by Youtube’s guideline.

10 Tips To Getting “Link Juice” And Free Targeted Traffic

February 25, 2010 By: vernette Category: How To - Website Traffic

Here’s a good question:

I’ve just created a blog and I’m looking for the quickest ways to drive traffic to my blog. I am not only looking for Free ways to market my website, but ways that really work in sending traffic please…not much money starting out!

Here is my answer to the question:

1. Write and submit articles.  Although this can be tedious and time-consuming, it’s the old tried and true method of getting free traffic and quality back links to your site.  However, you won’t get your articles posted in a timely fashion on some article directories like Ezinearticles.

Ezinearticles take at least a week to review your article before adding it to their database. Sometimes they reject your article and ask you to redo it. Then that takes at least another 7 days for a second review.

So instead of just waiting for your article to be approved by Ezinearticles, go ahead and submit a copy of that article on high profile websites related to your site’s niche.

For instance, a site like about.com, mashable, sitepronews, etc, are high profile websites and getting a link back to your site from sites like these can help you generate lots of traffic. Just make sure your article is outstanding with an attention-grabbing headline.

Many of these high profile websites have pages on their sites where you can submit articles.  Sometimes you might see a tab that says, “Write for us,” on these sites.   On some sites you might have to browse around a bit to find the page where you can submit articles.

Write quality, unique articles, and not articles that lack substance…articles providing no benefit or very little benefit for readers.  This can ruin your reputation and instead of increasing your traffic, it can put a dent in it.

2. Make your articles talk by converting them into videos. Google loves Youtube. I think they also have a love/hate relationship.

However, if you want some serious link juice with highly targeted traffic beating down your blog door, make sure you fall in love with videos. Video marketing is HOT. Combine videos and articles together, and you’ve got winners.

3. Submit ads to a high pagerank and high traffic Classified ad site such as USFreeads and Craigslist.  Goggle loves USFreeads also.  Get Free Classifieds from USfreeads!

4. Review websites in your niche on Alexa to try to take some of their traffic by including a reference back to your site.

5. Comment on other related blogs. Make sure the blog is a “Do Follow,” blog. Also you get more link juice by commenting on high Page Rank sites. Please do not spam.

6. Product testimonials.  If you purchase a product that you actually like, then leave a testimonial. Leave your url in your testimonial and you should receive some traffic.

7. Email Signature.  Whenever you send an email to someone, include your website url as a signature.  Here’s an example:

8. Keep updating content on your blog. Make sure you provide great value for your readers. Try posting at least three times per week. The more you post, the better. As your blog grows, I suggest posting everyday. This will definitely increase your traffic and keep your visitors coming back for more.

9. Tag blog posts at social bookmarking sites. Grab the Onlywire plugin. I also use the Auto Social Poster along with Only Wire.  Onlywire is a free plugin, but Auto Social Poster is not. Using both gives me more link juice.  I make sure that both are not bookmarking at the same sites.

You don’t want to post the same article or blog post on the same bookmarking site twice.  So every time I create a new post, Onlywire and Auto Social Poster bookmarks my post to over 40 social bookmarking sites. Social bookmarking works really well for me and generates about 50% of my traffic.

10. Ping.  Make sure you ping your blog after updates. You can use http://www.pingomatic.com.

Submit To Directories and Increase Traffic To Your Website

February 19, 2010 By: vernette Category: How To - Website Traffic

By: jeanpaul

Directories will always be around, the future for directories will change as the internet changes, they will need to adapt and additional services. The third important factor in directory submission is making sure you use the correct title, keywords, and descriptions in the right category. Once your site is included in a directory the listing is permanent and you will receive traffic everyday.

Despite customer resistance, eventually the message will get through that submission is not necessary. Search engines use directories to check the value of websites, remember directories are human edited and these directories add check for the search engines, one of the most popular directories that most search engines check with is dmoz. Submitting to directories is overlooked because it is so time consuming and it has to be done manually to be done right, but it is a great search engine optimization strategy.

Each listing carries a brief summary of the content contained within. Links in directories are free, paid, or free but need a reciprocal link. A directory is a compilation of links that are organized in a way to make it easy to search on. Sometimes, you search for something in the directory and you don’t find it, not because it is not there but because the directory search script just doesn’t cut it.

If you decide to pay for a directory listing make sure the directory has a good page rank and has a proven traffic record, this way you know that the money you spent is well worth it. Many directories offer free directory submissions. Paid and free are the most common form of directory model. A one way links or a link exchange is considered a free link. Search engines like to see a site updated regularly, and maintaining the directory will assure that all the links are still functional and that all the URLs still exist.

Many sites are rejected due to inappropriate descriptions. The description is the most difficult item to define correctly. One way to get help for an accurate description is to ask friends to view your website or ask people from forums to view your site. A description is not an advertisement and should never contain superlatives or excessive marketing hype. When writing your description you are not writing it to sell your product you need to write it showing the benefit of your product, no hard sell in the description.

When using directory submissions you will see an increase in links and traffic to your site. These are great methods of driving traffic to your site. The main thing you want for your website is targeted traffic and traffic that converts into sales.

When using a directory submission service make sure you find a service that will continually add your sites links to directories even after the initial submission. By paying one price for the initial submission and never having to pay again for additional submissions to directories is what you want.

The reasons for this are simple, submitting to directories is long monotonous process, it is easier to pay a flat rate and have someone else do it for you. When choosing the service make sure you can enter more than one title, description, categories and keywords. The reason for this is that you want to rotate the title and description among the directories. Make sure you receive a submission report and snapshots of the submissions. If you don’t receive emails from the directory owners this is a good indication that your site is not really being submitted.

Manual Directory Submission is one of the best ways to promote your website and achieving good visibility in search engines.

1 Ugly Secret To Getting Back Links To Your Blog

February 06, 2010 By: vernette Category: How To - Website Traffic

Many blogs like this blog offer “DoFollow” on comments. What this means is that you receive benefit from leaving a comment with a link back to your site in your name.

What really makes this special is that it will benefit your Search Engine Ranking Position (SERP). I don’t have a problem with this as long as the comments are genuine and it’s pretty much a way for me to say, “Thank you,” for visiting my blog.

On the other hand, when you place a sufficient number of comments on “NoFollow,” blogs in order to gain back links to your website or blog, you are pretty much wasting your time.

These links are ignored by the search engines. So make sure you post on “DoFollow,” blogs. However, don’t spam any blog whatsoever. Read the posts and be genuine in whatever you say in the comment box.

Now, posting comments on blogs just for gaining back links to your blog or website is so damn time-consuming that blog owners don’t want to do it. Some people actually or use software… what I consider, spam bots. Please don’t do this.

Now that’s not all. Here’s the ugly secret. To save the trouble of making hundreds of comments on various “DoFollow” blogs, and avoid getting caught in spam filters, there are companies that will make relevant comments on blog posts using your chosen anchor text.

They charge anywhere from $19 for 100 comments and even up to $199 for 1000 comments left on your behalf. Would I consider this BS? Maybe, maybe not. However, it’s not something I would do.

You know what, this can really become a problem for blog owners like me, because it makes the job of spotting spammy comments almost impossible. I do have the awful task of weeding through comments trying to decide whose comments are spam or not.

So let’s take this into consideration, would you consider this spam… comments that were not actually written by the stated author, but was paid for? Does the fact that the comments were paid for make it legitimate? What do you think?

1 Hot Tip To Getting Content For Your Articles

January 09, 2010 By: vernette Category: How To - Website Traffic

When I sit down in front of my computer to write my articles, sometimes I end up feeling like a cup with a hole in it. My brain seems completely empty…nothing is coming in or going out. I guess this is what they call writer’s block. So here’s what I do. I consult my good friend and savior…the forum.

Using a forum is one of the quickest and easiest ways to find enough content to write your article in 15 minutes or less. Note: You can actually borrow some of the questions and answers people post on the forums and just put them in your own words. That’s it. It takes me 15 minutes sometimes to write my articles because of my friend and trusted pal… the forum.

Let’s just dig a little deeper into what I’m actually talking about here. If you’re writing an article on how to avoid hair loss, just go to google.com and type in the words, “Hair loss forums,” in the search engine. You would be surprised to see how many forums you would find in that niche on google.com.

Go to the forum of your choice and check out some of the topics listed. You will find an abundance of information on that topic, all of the things that people are talking about regarding hair loss. Before you get started, I recommend that you open up your notepad, wordpad, etc on your computer and copy and paste some of the questions and answers from the forum.

Once you do that, take those questions, answers, tips etc, and completely rewrite them by adding your own unique style, and make sure you focus on your reader. I usually write and then I come up with the title afterwards. The title is extremely important as it is the deciding factor as to whether your article would be read or not. This is one of my many tips for finding content for my articles when my “Brain is leaking.”

I also love to visit answers.yahoo.com. It is filled with lots of questions and answers also. So you can actually write “question and answer” articles, which many people tend to like. I don’t actually use forums for all of my articles, like this one, but I highly recommend it for squeezing out an article quickly and easily when you’re sitting at your computer and suffering with writer’s block.

Article writing is one of the many ways of getting free traffic and back links to your website or blog. Although it can be tedious at times, it’s a great way to drive free traffic to your sites. Try using the forums in your niche and you would be amazed at how quickly and easily you can churn out articles and even content for your videos in only 15 minutes.

You might actually end up just like me… claiming the forums as your good old dependable friend.

How To Use Google To Send Highly Targeted Traffic To Your Website

October 17, 2009 By: vernette Category: How To - Website Traffic

Here’s an awesome traffic trick from Kim Roach:

TGIF!

I hope you’re just as excited as I am that
the weekend is finally here!

But before you put your party hat on, I want
to share a cool traffic trick that I just
discovered.

This one is super simple and can bring you hundreds of
extra visitors.

Here’s how it works…

First, you need to go to Google and type in the following
search queries:

“Daily Link Roundup”
“Weekly Link Roundup”
“Monday Link Roundup”
“Friday Link Roundup”
“Link Roundup”

If you want to find blogs that are specifically related to your
market, then you can add a modifier. Something like:

“Weekly Link Roundup” + parenting
“Weekly Link Roundup” + marketing
“Weekly Link Roundup” + moms

Simply attach your main keyword to the search query.

This will give you a list of blogs that do weekly link roundups.
Link roundups are basically where bloggers post their favorite links
and articles each week in what’s called a Link Roundup.

Best of all, there are thousands of blogs that do this on every
imaginable topic.

Now here’s where you come in…

Once you’ve found a related blog that does link roundups you can then
contact the blog owner and send them a link to your very best
content from your own blog.

If you’ve published truly great content, then there’s a very
good chance that they will link to you in their weekly link
roundup.

This gives you a high-quality backlink and sends you some laser
targeted traffic.

This is an extremely powerful technique that I see VERY few
people using online.

But it’s super simple and can send you lots of highly-targeted
traffic.
